Most people who come to us start the same way – they found a tin box or a cloth pouch while cleaning out a grandparent’s almirah and inside were coins nobody in the family could identify. Some turn out to be worth a few hundred rupees. Others, especially old British India or princely state coins in decent condition, have sold for far more than the family expected.
We’re Old Coin Buyer Company (contact number 7658842969) and buying old and rare coins is literally all we do. Not jewellery, not antiques in general – coins. That focus matters, because pricing an 1862 Victoria rupee correctly takes a different kind of knowledge than pricing a random antique.
Old Coin Buyer Company: What We Look At
There’s no single formula for pricing an old coin, and honestly, anyone who tells you “gold is worth X per gram so your coin is worth Y” is oversimplifying it. Two coins from the same year and ruler can sell for very different amounts depending on a few things:
- How rare it actually is: Some Mughal-era coins were minted in huge quantities and turn up often. Others were struck for a short period or at a smaller mint, and collectors will pay a premium just because fewer of them exist.
- Condition, not age alone: A coin from 1750 in rough shape can be worth less than a cleaner coin from 1850. Wear, scratches and – this trips people up a lot – cleaning or polishing, which usually hurts value rather than helping it.
- Mint errors: Off-center strikes, double stamping, wrong die pairings. These sound like defects but among collectors they’re often the most desirable pieces in a batch.
- What collectors are currently paying: Like any collectible market, demand shifts. A type of coin that was fetching a certain price two years ago might be priced differently now based on auction results and collector interest.
The Coins We Buy Most Often
| Period | What We See Commonly | Notes |
| Ancient (pre-Mughal) | Punch-marked silver, Kushan copper coins | Harder to date without expert eyes |
| Mughal | Akbar to Aurangzeb era rupees and paisa | Condition varies a lot |
| British India | East India Company issues, Victoria, George V/VI | Most common category we're offered |
| Princely states | Hyderabad, Gwalior, Kutch, Jaipur mints | Often undervalued by sellers |
| Post-independence | Error coins, low-mintage years | Not all "old" - some 1980s-90s coins qualify |
| Currency notes | Pre-1950 notes, early Reserve Bank issues | Condition matters even more here |
How the Process Actually Works
We keep it fairly straightforward and we don’t ask you to send us the coin first.
Send us clear photos – both sides at +91-7658842969, in decent light, no filters that change the color. That’s usually enough for us to tell you a rough range. If it looks like something with real value, we’ll ask a few more questions: where it’s from, any markings you can make out, roughly what condition it’s in.
If the number we quote works for you, we arrange verification – either you send the coin by insured courier, or in a handful of cities we can send someone to look at it in person. Once it checks out against what the photos showed, payment goes out the same day, usually by bank transfer.
Things People Get Wrong (Worth Knowing Before You Sell)
- Don’t clean the coin: This is probably the most common mistake. That dark patina on an old coin isn’t dirt to a collector – it’s evidence of age, and scrubbing it off with vinegar or a cloth can knock a real coin down to near-scrap value.
- “Old” doesn’t automatically mean valuable: We get a lot of 1970s-80s one and two rupee coins that people assume are rare simply because they’re not in circulation anymore. Most aren’t worth much more than face value – though a handful of specific error coins from that era genuinely are.
- Online price lists are a starting point, not gospel: A lot of the “old coin price” charts circulating on YouTube and WhatsApp are outdated or exaggerated. Actual sale prices depend on the specific coin’s condition and current buyer interest, not a flat number per year.
- Get more than one opinion if the coin looks significant: We’d rather you feel confident in the number than rush a sale you’re unsure about.

A Few Questions We Get Often
Important Questions
Will you buy just one coin, or do I need a whole collection?
Just one is fine. Some of our best finds have come from a single coin someone almost didn’t bother asking about.
How fast is this, realistically?
Photo evaluation is usually same-day or next-day. The full process, from first contact to payment, tends to run about 3-5 days depending on courier time and city.
What if I don't agree with the price you quote?
You’re not obligated to sell. We’d rather explain how we arrived at a number than have someone sell at a price they’re unhappy with.
Do you buy coins from outside India too?
Yes, occasionally – mostly older British, Roman or American coins that people have picked up through travel or inheritance. Worth sending photos either way.
Contact us at 7658842969.
